The average cost of paediatric cardiac surgery, on a case-by-case basis, is in excess of R250 000. With the generous support of strategic partners in the form of financial assistance, substantial discounts and donations, paediatric open-heart surgery at the WSPCCA costs in the region of only R160 000 per patient. This results in an average saving of R90 000 per patient. Discounted fees are charged by surgeons and other medical personnel, the hospital, laboratories and X-rays, as well as many of the leading pharmaceutical companies who provide services and consumables at considerably reduced rates or free.

An amount of R160 000 over 70 years – assuming this will be the life expectancy of a child after receiving corrective surgery – does not amount to a large sum of money. But the reality is that this cost has to be paid up-front. A R1-million donation can cover only seven patients, and major investment in the children of tomorrow is needed today, and on an on-going basis.

Continued financial input needs to be assured to facilitate the sustainability of the WSPCCA. Donor funds are required to ensure that the WSPCCA will no longer have to turn children away because of a lack of funds.
